About: Dwarf Fortress has become somewhat synonymous with free to play gaming, and the idea of a gaming community supporting itself. Having been in development since 2002, Dwarf Fortress has survived 15 years as a game and is still going strong. Surface level the gameplay in Dwarf Fortress is that of a building/resource management simulator, but the real gameplay is found in the emergent weirdness that keeps people coming back for more. If you want to direct the rise of a civilization, Dwarf Fortress may be the game for you.

About: Frog Fractions is weird. The game appears to be something it is definitely not. If you never played through this memey game back in 2012, give it a go. The less you know about Frog Fractions, the better the experience. That’s a promise.
OpenRA (Red Alert)

About: There was a time when Command & Conquer was the go to for military RTS games. Now, C&C is a shell of what it once was. Regardless, some folks over at OpenRA love Red Alert enough to keep the 1996 classic game alive. If you want to dive in and attempt to win the Cold War as the Allies or Soviets, OpenRA will let you do that.
Super Crate Box

About: Developers Vlambeer have made some fun indie titles like Nuclear Throne, Ridiculous Fishing, and Luftrausers, but before all those was Super Crate Box. Created as a way to build hype for the studio, Super Crate Box was released for free, and is actually quite good. In the game, you’re tasked with defeating waves of enemies as they attempt to reach the bottom of the screen. While fighting enemies, crates drop which are collected for points. Upon collection of the crates, a new gun is equipped by your character.
The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall

About: Before Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim, there was Daggerfall and Arena. These game’s paved the way for the massive success The Elder Scrolls series would experience, so why not try them out? You can grab Daggerfall for free at the link above. Note in typical The Elder Scrolls fashion, Daggerfall game is buggy.
Update 2019: Destiny 2

In 2019 Bungie bought back the rights to Destiny and parted ways with Activision. This decision led to another couple of interesting moves by Bungie including moving to Steam and making the base game Free-To-Play. That’s right, if you haven’t gotten a chance to play this loot-shoot-space hoot, now’s your chance. Head on over to Steam and grab the space shooter for free.
While researching for the list, I came to the realization that there are a ton of good, free games out there to pick up. This makes me happy to see as sometimes money is tight, but you still want something new to play. I hope this list helped you to find some new free games to try out!
