Nintendo Switch is Proving To Be A Hit – Fastest Selling Console in US History
Nintendo had a bit of a tough time with the launch of the Wii U. The console itself sold rather poorly over the course of its 4 year lifespan and never really lived up to the high hopes Nintendo had. The next console down the pipe, the Nintendo Switch, had somewhat muted expectations from the company, but it has proven to be a really winner for Nintendo.
Nintendo Switch Sets Record
Mixing module, on the go gaming, with the traditional living room console concept, the Nintendo Switch has had a huge year in the U.S. console segment. Nintendo announced the historic sales numbers stating:
“The home console that players can take wherever they go launched March 3, 2017, and in 10 months has sold more than 4.8 million units in the United States, according to Nintendo’s internal sales figures,” Nintendo continued. “That’s the highest total for the first 10 months of any home video game system in U.S. history, surpassing Nintendo’s own Wii system, which was the previous record holder with more than four million units sold during the same time frame.”
At 4.8 million units sold in the United States in its first ten months, the Nintendo Switch passes the previous record of 4.0 million units sold that was held by the Wii.
Much of this sales success can be attributed to the uncharacteristically packed game release year the Nintendo Switch had. 2017 saw the release of both a Mario property (Mario Odyssey) as well as a Zelda property (The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild), which helped to spur on sales of Nintendo’s new console. Nintendo revealed that more than 60 percent of U.S. Switch owners own Mario Odyssey and more than 55 percent own The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
After such an incredible 2017, it will be interesting to see how Nintendo keeps the hype alive for the Nintendo Switch, as 2018 is somewhat light on big Nintendo titles. With that being said, there is enough of an interest in both Mario and Zelda, that continued sales should not be all that difficult.
