Storyline Quest: The Encroaching Anjanath

Hunting Quest Text: “As we’re gearing up to capture Zorah Magdaros, we need to secure Astera as much as we can. It’s too much of a risk to have the Anjanath roaming so close to base.”

Characteristics: The Anjanath patrols the Ancient Forest, looking for its favorite meal, Aptonoth. This belligerent monster will attack anything without hesitation.

Useful Information: Anajanath spits fiery blasts from its mouth utilizing a unique organ in its throat. Focusing your attacks on its throat will make battling it much easier.

Anjanath Fight Guide

Main Fight Mechanics: Roar + Fireblight (status effect)

Roar: Large monsters have the ability to roar. This ability disrupts whatever action the hunter was doing (stun locks you briefly). There’s not much you can do about it in the early game (you’ll get better armor perks later).

Fireblight: Anjanath is a monster that can deal fire element damage. This damage can cause Fireblight, a status effect. When being afflicted with Fireblight, a small flame will appear over the hunter’s health bar (two for Severe), and the red health bar will turn red and begin to decrease. To cure this affliction, simply roll into water once, roll on the ground three times, or consume a Nulberry.

Attacks:

Anjanath is a hard hitting monster in the early game and has some of the more complicated attack patterns we’ve seen so far. It also goes through a sort of metamorphosis as you progress into the fight, as it sprouts wings. When the wings sprout, Anjanath becomes more mobile and deadly. Let’s take a closer look:

*I attempted to grab all the attacks I saw. Let me know if I missed some in The Pit.

No Wings:

  • Tail Slam: Slams tail down from right to left if player is located behind.
  • Bite: If close to Anjanath’s head, the monster will attempt to bite you.
  • Shoulder Charge: Anjanath will lower its should and charge.
  • Side Slam: Slam to the left or right if the hunter is standing on that side.
  • Kick: If you hang around Anhjanath’s legs, it will attempt to kick you.
  • Spin: Can spin 180 to face player with a tailspin.

Wings (keeps same attacks but adds):

  • Fire Breath (Causes Fireblight) – Shoots long, sustained fire from its mouth.
  • Fire Add (Causes Fireblight) – Adds fire damage to bites.

Fight Tips:

Group up. Kidding. This fight is totally doable in singleplayer, but it requires some planning. Here are some tips to conquer Annie.

  • Eat up – Head into the fight having eaten a meal from the Canteen (do this for every fight to make life easier).
  • Bring Nullberry and Healing – Make sure you have Nullberry and healing on you. Going into the fight without either makes it way worse.
  • Stay Under Annie’s Belly – I’ve found that standing directly underneath Annie shields you from most damage and allows you to deal damage.
  • Get near the Head When it Breathes Fire – When Annie winds up to release its fire breathe, there is a ton of time to run up beside its head where it is safe (you can deal damage in this instance as well.
  • Exploit Elemental Weakness: This isn’t applicable for a first fight (you won’t have access to elemental weapons), but is useful if you want to farm. As noted above, Annie is especially weak to water elemental damage.
  • SOS – If you need to, send out an SOS and get some extra help from the MHW community.

Note: share your tips in the comments and I will add them here.
