Blasphemous Reveal Trailer Full of Brutality

In 2017 I covered a kickstarter for Blasphemous, an upcoming title out of The Game Kitchen (studio behind The Last Door). What caught my attention with the game was its brutal design. Everything in the Kickstarter trailer looked ready to kill you, and I loved that. Fast forward two years and we are getting another look at the title in a new trailer. Check out the Blasphemous revela trailer below.

If you don’t know anything about Blasphemous, here is a brief rundown of the game’s description from The Game Kitchen:

Prepare for a descent into a dark and punishing Metroidvania world where fast-paced, skilled combat combines with a deep and evocative narrative core. You will play as The Penitent One, a sole survivor of the massacre of the ‘Silent Sorrow’. Exploring the nightmarish world of Cvstodia and unlocking the hellish secrets within, only you can free it from a twisted fate and reach the origin of your torment.

Many of the elements mentioned above are highlighted in the new reveal trailer. As the trailer starts we are hit with an awesome electric guitar song that plays throughout the entire trailer. This metal infused sound soundtrack seems to perfectly capture the depravity we witness on screen. The brutality in this trailer seems to take things up a notch since the Kickstarter trailer I saw back in 2017. We see what appears to be a number of executions ranging from decapitations to slaming someone to death with a large wheel. Further into the trailer we get a look at more bosses, each design looks interesting and shockingly twisted. I especially like the blind child wearing a crown of thorns.

From the trailer we can see shades of Dark Souls influence. There appears to be a number of different environments to explore in a non-linear fashion. This exploration is coupled with brutal combat which requires ‘pixel perfect’ execution with the Mea Culpa, the main weapon of The Penitent One. There are also Alters which appear to act as a sort of checkpoint system (like bonfires).

Diverting from its Dark Souls inspiration is a number of gameplay elements that aim to put a spin on the genre. Instead of stamina, you posses a meter that charges with each landed hit. Upon full charge you are able to unleash a devastating attack. There is also more emphasis on verticality, with The Penitent One having a number of platforming abilities such as ledge grabbing and wall jumps.

If you wish to experience the brutality of Blasphemous at launch, you can wishlist the game now on Steam. No release date has been set.
