How to Get Fossil Pokemon in Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield

In Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield there are a total of 400 Pokemon to collect. These Pokemon come from a wide range of sources including fossils. Fossil Pokemon work similar to previous generations as you need to take the fossils you gather to the Fossil Restoration NPC on Route 6. To help get these Pokemon consult our how to get Fossil Pokemon in Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield.

What to Do With Fossils?

Throughout the Galar Region you will find Fossils hidden across the world. These fossils can be restored back into Pokemon. To restore fossils back to Pokemon you will need to interact with the Fossil Restoration NPC along Route 6. This scientist can be found next to the tent along the on top of the cliff that is accessible via the far left ladder.

Once you reach the top of the cliff you can speak to an NPC and give her Fossils you find to make Pokemon. Instead of giving one fossil like in previous gens you combined two fossils (top+bottom) to make a Pokemon. There are four possible Pokemon you can get from fossils:

  • Arctozolt (Electric/Ice): Fossilized Bird + Fossilized Dino
  • Dracozolt (Electric/Dragon): Fossilized Bird + Fossilized Drake
  • Arctovish (Water/Ice): Fossilized Fish + Fossilized Dino
  • Dracovish (Water/Dragon): Fossilized Fish + Fossilized Drake

Keep in mind that the fossil types listed above are split between Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield. So you will need to work together with others if you want to get all available fossil Pokemon.

How to Get Fossils?

Fossils come from a wide variety of sources. Two guaranteed sources are: two fossils from the man inside the Stow-on-Side Pokemon Center and two fossils in a bush near the Fossil Restoration NPC (pictured above). After you’ve mined these sources you can explore some more options below.

The Digging Duo

In the Bridge Field Wild Area (northeast of Motostoke) you will find a pair of NPCs called the Digging Duo. As their name suggests you can pay them Watts to dig you up stuff. It costs you 500 Watts per dig and you have the potential to receive a fossil as a reward. Keep in mind there are a number of items you can get from the Digging Duo so you are not guaranteed fossils. With that said it is a very quick method to get more fossils if you have plenty of Watts on hand.

That’s all you need to know to get your own fossil Pokemon in Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield.
