Paper Mario: The Origami King Overlook Tower Guide

When you finally complete the Earth Vellumental Temple and get the Earth Vellumental’s power you can access the Overlook Tower on Overlook Mountain. This tower was raised into the air via the ground below and can be accessed when you use the Earth Vellumental’s power on the magic spot there. Once you’ve gained access to the tower you will need to make your way through the location to fight a boss. To help you navigate this location use our Paper Mario: The Origami King Overlook Tower guide.

Overlook Tower Collectibles List (100%)

  • 1x ? Block.
  • 3x Not-Bottomless Holes.
  • 14x Toad.
  • 2x Collectible Treasures.

Not all collectibles in this location can be grabbed during the first run through. You will need to advance the story until you defeat the Water Vellumental to get everything listed above.

Overlook Tower Guide

As mentioned above you can access the Overlook Tower on top of Overlook Mountain. When at this location you can use the Earth Vellumental’s power on the magic spot to lower the tower so you can enter it. Inside this tower you must reach the top floor where you will fight the boss called Colored Pencils.

When you enter the Overlook Tower you will see a huge Not-Bottomless Hole 1 you need to repair to access the floor. Once repaired head straight to the elevator and push the elevator button to get Toad 1 out. The elevator will send you up to the next floor, but avoid it for now as there are a number of collectibles we can find on this floor still:

  • Toad 2: Head to the right of the elevator and jump onto the shelves to reach the wall with the red and white flag. Hit the flag to rescue a Toad.
  • Toad 3: Hammer the blue garbage can by the shelves we jumped on to find 3x Toads.
  • Toad 4: Walk down form the garbage can to find three blue and white towers on a display. Hit them then hammer each one to free a Toad.
  • Toad 5: Head to the left-side of the room and hit the spinning display twice to send a Toad flying out of it.

You can’t confetti the Not-Bottomless Hole 2 next to the stairs just yet so head back to the elevator now and ride it up. About halfway through the ride you will be interrupted by some pencils. Hammer the pencils out and the elevator will drop to back to the first floor where you will be attacked by a gang of Goombas and Paragoombas. When this gang is defeated you will get a bunch of Confetti. Use it to fill in Not-Bottomless Hole 2 so you can head to the second floor.

On the second floor of the tower go into the door on the left to reach a storage room. Inside this storage room is Not-Bottomless Hole 3. Unfortunately for us we can’t fill it in as we have no confetti. At this revelation the Chef Toad will appear and will offer to help you if you help with a task. Turn left from the chef and hit the hidden ? Block in the scribbles. Use the revealed block to jump onto the crates up to the tape on the wall. Peel the tape to rescue Toad 6.

Leave the storage room and head to the right past the elevator to reach the restaurant. Make your way to the right and open the cabinet in the right corner to free Toad 7. Head inside the kitchen and look for the following collectibles:

  • Toad 8: Hammer the closed trash can next to the carrot drawing on the back wall.
  • Toad 9: Hammer the pan with the egg in it in the right corner.
  • Toad 10: Hammer the cabinet in the left corner of the kitchen to force the drawer open where you will find a Toad.
  • Toad 11: Use the drawer that we opened to reach the shelf with the scale and mushroom on it. Hammer the mushroom.
  • Toad 12: Walk along the shelves until you reach the pile of pots in the top right corner. Hammer these pots.

Helping the Chef Toad

Once you’ve found all the Toads listed above head over to the refrigerator and open it. Hit the box inside to send out a number of mini-Goombas. To complete the chef’s quest you need to clear these suckers out. To do this hit them with your hammer or jump on them. They go to the following locations:

Kitchen

  • Under the Trash Can.
  • On Top of Plates.
  • In the pot with the frowny face (jump into it).
  • On the shelves above.

Dining Room

  • Restaurant logo on back wall.
  • Wall behind serving cart (hit it to the right with your hammer to reach).
  • Wall above cabinet you found Toad 7.

While you are hunting these creatures one may become attached to your back. Rotate the left-thumstick in a circle until it goes flying off. When you’ve squashed them all the music changes back to normal and you can return to the Chef Toad in the storage room.

Give the Chef Toad the good news about his pest free kitchen to receive some confetti for your troubles. Use the confetti to repair Not-Bottomless Hole 3. Go up the stairs to reach the Overlook Tower’s roof.

Overlook Tower Roof

On the Overlook Tower Roof head right and interact with the gate there to learn it is locked. When you interact with it pencils will launch and attack to hit you. Run to the right and look for a weak spot on the brick fence (shown above). Stand by it while fending off the pencil assault until they lock on to Olivia. She will get hit by the pencil which blows a hole in the fence allowing you to enter the patio area.

In the patio area head to the left of the elevator door and hit the red button near the ladder. When you hit the button the ladder will begin to lower. Run around avoiding the pencils until the ladder is fully down. Climb up the ladder to reach floor 4 which is basically a staging area for the boss fight. Hit the blue pencil inside the elevator with your hammer to rescue Toad 13. Save your game then head up the stairs.

Overlook Tower Boss: Colored Pencils

On the observation deck head over to the Red Streamer roll and attempt to unroll it by jumping into it. This will trigger a cutscene and the boss fight with Colored Pencils will begin. Like the last boss fight you need to make your way to the boss using the arrows to make a path. During this fight you want to avoid stepping on the squares that have targets on them as they will deal damage to you. Some other tips for this fight include:

  • Get to the back of the case to close the lid causing the missiles to explode inside (not during Rainbow Roll).
  • Equip Guard Plus and Heart Plus accessories available at the Accessories Shop outside of the Earth Vellumental Temple.
  • Use Toad cheer when needed to get health and other bonuses
  • Block whenever possible.
  • Add time with + if you need to think.

Once you defeat Colored Pencils a Magic Circle will appear. Use your 1,000 Fold Arm to hit the Red Streamer so it unravels. Upon completing this you will receive an upgrade to the Max Confetti you can carry.

Where to go after Red Streamer is Destroyed

Image showing where to go after destroying the Red Streamer in Overlook Tower.

The next location we need to head is towards the Blue Streamer on the Red Mountain. To do this we can head back to the tram on Overlook Mountain to head to Autumn Mountain. Before we do that look through the telescope on the right side of the observation deck and then hit it with a hammer to find Toad 14.

With the Red Streamer destroyed you can head back to Picnic Road (use pipe in sport park to reach) and go into the Sensor Lab there. This location features a few collectibles to grab if you are so inclined along with the Toad Radar. If you are not interested in this go down to the tram on Overlook Mountain to advance the story.

After Defeating Water Vellumental

Once you’ve defeated the Water Vellumental in the Water Vellumental Shrine you can comeback to the Overlook Tower to access the now operational elevator. Go to the second floor and enter the restaurant. Head into the kitchen and speak to the Chef Toad to get Collectible Treasure No.28: Chef’s TRULY WILD Special. Go back to the elevator and ride it to the third floor which is the Open-Air Cafe. Speak to the Toad in the cafe to get the Collectible Treasure No.29: Overlook Tower.
