Legendary Animals Guide – Red Dead Online

In the 1.2 update for Red Dead Online Rockstar introduced a new role called the Naturalist. As the name of this role suggests you will spend your time researching and protecting the natural world for a new NPC called Harriet. When you first meet Harriet you will also meet a hunter named Gus. Gus serves a vital purpose for players as he provides a new vendor to sell animal materials to and also creates Legendary Garments and Trinkets. To help you excel in this hunter role use our Legendary Animals guide below.

Important Note: Harriet gets mad if you kill animals which can prove difficult given the conflicting nature of the Gus/Harriet systems in the game. If you kill a number of animals (20+ it seems) and return to her she will spray you in the face again like she did when you first met. After you wake up away from Harriet you will be locked out of interacting with her for about 5 minutes.

Where to Find Legendary Animals in Red Dead Online

Image showing the Legendary Animal Sightings missions Harriet offers in Red Dead Online.

There are a few ways to get Legendary Animals in Red Dead Online. The first way is a guaranteed but select pool that comes from the Legendary Animal Sightings Harriet gives you starting at Naturalist Level 5. During these missions you are tasked with finding and taking a sample from a certain Legendary Animal. Instead of taking the sample you will instead be killing and skinning the Legendary Animal to give its materials to Gus. As you level the role you will unlock a total of three active Legendary Animal Sightings you can choose from. These will sighting refresh regularly, but the pool of animals available is fairly small. I’ve seen the following Legendary Animals in these missions:

  • Cross Fox.
  • Moonstone Wolf.
  • Night Beaver.
  • Payta Bison.
  • Sapa Cougar.
  • Icahi Boar.
  • Inahme Elk.
  • Rutile Horn Ram.

This pool of nine animals is an easy way to farm animal parts, skins and money. With that said these Legendary Animals are only a few of the supposed 41 (Animal Field Guide > Legendary Animal Categories) in the game. Since there are so many missing you are probably wondering how to find these other Legendary Animals. Let’s head onto the next way of finding Legendary Animals.

Where to Find Legendary Animals in Red Dead Online’s Open-World

Image showing the Legendary Animal Map in Red Dead Online.

The bulk of the Legendary Animals you will find in the open-world of Red Dead Online. This makes the process incredibly annoying and tedious. For starters you will receive a map of their locations when you become a Naturalist. This map will only show a few locations. As you level up the Naturalist role the map will add more locations until it is filled as shown above.

Animal Field Guide Information

Image showing the Moon Beaver information in Red Dead Online.

I wish I could tell you the map above is useful and that Legendary Animals are easy to find, but that’s just not the case. Finding Legendary Animals in the open-world of Red Dead Online is currently a major pain in the ass. The map basically shows the general location, but omits pertinent information like time of day and weather conditions. Unfortunately all of this information can be found inside the Animal Field Guide after you’ve interacted with the animal once before. Here’s an example:

Moon Beaver: This beaver can be found near the Kamassa River where they build their dams. With its white fur and black tail, it is of great interest to poachers and trappers. Cautious of humans, beavers will flee if approached. They may also bite and nip. This particular species is most active at the start and end of the day. It also prefers wet weather.

Cogi Boar: This uncommmon boar is found just north of Bluewater Marsh. It can be quickly identified by its pale bristles. Keep in mind, boars can become aggressive and charge if threatened. This subspecies can be found foraging at dawn.

The above entries for their respective Legendary Animals provide all the information needed to find that animal. Since many of the Legendary Animals are like this you may want to wait for more information to emerge about each open-world legendary. While you are waiting you should be leveling the Naturalist role since it has a number of passives that will help in your legendary hunting (including increasing Legendary Animal chances).

How to Hunt Legendary Animals

Hunting Legendary Animals when you can find them is a relatively easy thing to do. When you enter an area where there is a Legendary Animal you should hear a sound associated to them. As you get closer to the sound you will trigger a message in the left corner of the hud that says a Legendary Animal is nearby. When this message appears you can use Legendary Animal Pheromones to mark their location on your mim-map with a yellow ?. Head to their location and start track them. if needed Once you do reach the Legendary Animal you will need to decide if you want to sedate or kill. Obviously that’s up to you just know either method will require expending a fair amount of ammo as the Legendary Animals are more tankie than their common counterparts.

Where to Find Gus in Red Dead Online

Image showing the location of Gus on the map in Red Dead Online to the east of Tumbleweed.

Once you’ve interacted with Gus at the start of the Naturalist Role he will setup camp at various locations around the Frontier. These campsites can be found in the following 6 areas:

  • Saint Denis.
  • West of Elysian Pool.
  • Next to Riggs Station.
  • Southwest corner of Tall Trees.
  • West corner of Big Valley.
  • East of Tumbleweed.

Logistically speaking the easiest campsites to visit Gus in are the Saint Denis and Tumbleweed locations where there are fast travel stations nearby. If you are looking for Gus on your map just look for the paw + $ icon. These icons are where you will find Gus camps.

Where to Get Legendary Animal Clothing and Trinkets in Red Dead Online

Image showing the options Gus presents you when spoken to in his camps in Red Dead Online.

One of the primary services Gus provides players with is turning Legendary Animals into Legendary Animal Outfits. How this system works is pretty similar to the solo campaign. The player needs to hunt Legendary Animals to collect materials from them. Once materials have been collected like pelts, teeth, antlers, and other animal parts you can sell them to Gus. After Gus has the materials he can create a number of things for you:
