What is That? Death’s Gambit Looks Insane!
June and July have both been relatively quiet months for game releases. This is okay, but if you go hard like me, you want new games to sink your time into. When I’m not gaming, I spend my time looking at games I want to play. Today I noticed my Steam Wishlist had ballooned to 15 games. Being a sensible individual, I explored my wishlist to see what was on it. After removing Yooka – Laylee, I noticed a game called Death’s Gambit. Having a bad memory, I went to the store page and was immediately blown away by what I saw. All I can say is that Death’s Gambit looks insane and I’m officially re-hyped.

If you recall, I wrote about my hype for the upcoming game Blasphemous a few weeks ago; Death’s Gambit appears to be hitting a similar tone. Coming out of indie studio White Rabbit, Death’s Gambit is billing itself as:
a challenging Action-RPG where you explore an alien medieval planet filled with beasts, knights, and horrors. As an agent of Death, bound to his service, you must banish your fears and endure the struggle that lies at the heart of Leydia. Master the precise combat, strategically plan out your attacks, and face-off against terrifying creatures that reach to the skies. Use an arsenal of weapons and abilities to explore the unforgiving lands, rich with secrets and twisted characters that may aid or hinder your journey. Of the footage I’ve seen so far, Death’s Gambit appears to be a crazy love child of 2D Dark Souls and Shadow of Colossus. Merging these two games together seems like an instant success. Just the sheer scale of the boss fights already has me interested in Death’s Gambit.
Another aspect of the game I also find interesting is the boss fight mechanic. According to a post on White Rabbits tumblr, “Before every boss fight there will be an indicator for “Average Deaths,” which represents how frequently an average player dies before defeating the boss. If you do better than the online average, then you will be rewarded.” Yes Please!
You can follow along with Death’s Gambit at the official site here, as well as on the occasional livestream. While no official date has been given for release, Steam is listing the game as coming in 2017.
