A Winfrey in Time…

This can’t wait, so let’s get into it right now. We officially need a moratorium on trailers that refer to directors as “visionary”. Honestly, I can’t say that there is a single director that I would refer to as a visionary, but movie trailers liberally proclaim this moniker, even when it doesn’t make any sense. It certainly seems very weird to refer to Ava DuVerny as a “visionary director”, particularly when A Wrinkle in Time is a major departure from the rest of DuVerny’s filmography. I could understand it if she had been making indie fantasy films up until this point, and that is the reason why she was placed in the A Wrinkle in Time director’s chair, but she has been cutting her teeth on independent dramas up until this point. So, referring to her as a “visionary director”, particularly when this film is a deviation from her vision as a director up until this point, seems like it heaps way too many expectations on a director who is throwing their hat into the big blockbuster ring for the first time.

Anyways, as for the trailer for A Wrinkle in Time, I am getting serious Spy Kids and The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnasus vibes off what I saw, and that remains to be seen whether or not that is a good or a bad thing. I am certainly excited for a big budget fantasy (I’m assuming that the YA source material is fantasy) film, so I’ll give this film a gander. There are tons of visual ideas jammed into this short teaser, I really got no sense of what the plot is, and I was mostly just unimpressed by the visual effects, but I would certainly rather check out something like this, than another *insert generic Blockbuster genre here* film. And, this colourful fantasy vibe seems to be Disney’s plan of attack as of late, because A Wrinkle in Time is certainly apeing on the Thor: Ragnarok and Black Panther trailers, with its focus on crazy/colourful visuals.

One final thing, there is that shot of Oprah dressed up all crazy, and then it cuts to the girl, and it seriously looks the she (who I assume is the lead) is doing Oprah Winfrey cos-play…

“Look into the eyes of a FilmApe and you will see real stupidity. It is a kind of bottomless stupidity, a fiendish stupidity. They are the most horrifying, cannibalistic and nightmarish creatures in the world.” - Werner Herzog

Of course. I like to keep my sci-fi appetite whetted. And Oprah Winfrey is a killer bonus https://media1.giphy.com/media/v2uiuJw5vne2Q/giphy.gif

Looks visionary. I’m guessing you go double feature, this and Valerian once you pop on the 4K copies
