With the Slingshot in your inventory wander around your island and look to the skies. Often times you will see a balloon floating with a present attached to it. To shoot the balloon down equip your Slingshot and stand below the ballon. Shoot the Slingshot with A. If needs be, readjust your position to hit the balloon (the aiming is a bit wonky). Once the balloon is hit it will pop and the present will fall to the ground. Look the present and open it in your inventory to receive whatever items is inside.
