Dark Souls 3: Champion’s Gravetender & Gravetender Greatwolf Walkthrough
With the new Dark Souls 3 Ashes of Ariandel DLC out, players now have two new bosses to fight. The first optional boss is the Champion’s Gravetender & Gravetender Greatwolf. This boss fight is relatively straightforward, but I will offer some tips if you need it. Below is my Champion’s Gravetender & Gravetender Greatwolf walkthrough.
Getting to the Boss Fight
In order to access the Champion’s Gravetender & Gravetender Greatwolf boss fight, players need to access the boss fight arena. To do this, head to the Ariandel Chapel bonfire. Leave the chapel and head to the suspension bridge. Stay on the side with the chapel and cut the suspension bridge. The bridge will break, creating a ladder for you to climb down. Climb down the ladder. From here you will see a network of roots below you. Use the roots to access the lower, bottom of the canyon. When on the bottom, look for the alcove with the bonfire in it. Snag the bonfire. Leave the bonfire and head right. Keep going and you will reach the Champion’s Gravetender & Gravetender Greatwolf boss area.
Champion’s Gravetender & Gravetender Greatwolf Walkthrough
Now that you’ve made it to the boss arena, it is time to fight. Like most Dark Souls 3 fights, Champion’s Gravetender & Gravetender Greatwolf is a two phase fight. Phase 1 starts with you entering the tower looking thing. When you enter, you will see a small wolf and a man. Upon entering, both will aggro you. My approach was to simply focus the wolf first. When you kill the small wolf, two more will come in. Again I focused the adds first before attacking the Champion’s Gravetender. With the wolves out of the way, focus your attention on the Champion’s Gravetender.
Champion’s Gravetender is a pretty easy fight. The boss wields Valorheart, which is a sword and shield combo. The first time I did this fight I used Champion Gundyr’s Halbred (NG++) and the second time I used the Follower’s Sable (NG+++). Both weapons have good staggering/stunlocking potential which worked well against the Champion’s Gravetender. Move set wise, the Champion’s Gravetender likes to combo. Be careful, as these combos can quickly kill you. He also uses a leap attack which can catch you if you aren’t paying attention. When fighting, I found it easiest to go on the offensive. My strategy was simply to guard break do a bit of damage then repeat. With a bit of damage, you’ll find the first phase is relatively quick.
PHASE 2
The second phase gets a bit more tricky. Once you get the Champion’s Gravetender down to about half health (?), he will summon in the Gravetender Greatwolf. Gravetender Greatwolf is similar to a lot of the other big animals in the Souls series (Royal Rat Authority, Sif), but the wrinkle here is have to deal with two bosses. When the Champion’s Gravetender summons, don’t panic. Simply focus on putting down as much damage as possible on him. I focused the Champion’s Gravetender to quickly get him out of the way and make the fight more manageable.
The Gravetender Greatwolf has similar attacks to both Royal Rat Authority and Sif. The wolf can charge, do a spin attack and also use it’s front paws to swipe. The charge is indicated by swirling snow around the wolf’s head. When the wolf starts the charge, there are two ways to dodge, straight up roll or use the pillars to separate yourself from the wolf. The Gravetender Greatwolf charge lasts 3 cycles. To deal damage, treat it like you would a Sif or Royal Rat Authority fight. Stay close to the backside, deal damage when able. Once you get about half way, the Gravetender Greatwolf will become red eyed. In the frenzied state, he will deal more damage, while also adding a new breathe attack. I have found that putting as much damage on the Gravetender Greatwolf as he becomes enraged can usually result in a short second phase.
Once you beat the boss, you will receive Valorheart and Champion’s Bones. Champion’s Bones are burned at the Shrine Bonfire in order to access the new PvP arena which is part of this DLC.
