Destiny 2: How to Get Exotic Ciphers

The new season of Destiny 2 brings with it a number of new additions by way of things like new armor sets, new weapons, a new public event, and even new currencies. Dubbed Exotic Cipher, this new rare currency allows players to purchase various Exotic weapons from both Master Rahool and Xur. So how can you get this rare currency for yourself? Check out our how to get Exotic Ciphers guide below for all the information you need.

How to Get Exotic Ciphers in Destiny 2

I have good and bad news for you. The good news is that there is currently one guaranteed way of getting at least one Exotic Cipher and that’s by reach level 55 of the Season Pass. At level 55 players (both free and paid) receive a single Exotic Cipher. This is the good news. The bad news is that reaching level 55 will take a bit of time.

Furthering the bad news is the fact that Bungie has confirmed that there is only one Exotic Cipher this season. As things progress they will be looking into new ways of earning this currency in the future. So for the time being you only get one in Season of Arrivals.

As of writing this is currently the only verified way of getting the Exotic Ciphers. With that said there are rumors floating around that this new exotic currency can be a rare drop from different activities like Nightfalls, Contact Public Events, Xur, and so on. Until there is more proof of these claims I can’t say for sure, but note you may have a chance of getting this rare drop by simply playing different activities.

What to Do With Exotic Ciphers in Destiny 2

Once you have an Exotic Cipher for yourself you may want to know what to do with it. Since it is a currency you can spend it at certain merchants in exchange for items:

  • Xur: Can be used to get a second weekly Fated Engram.
  • Master Rahool: Can trade in Exotic Ciphers and various materials to get Exotic Weapons from previous seasons.

Keep in mind you can only have one Exotic Cipher in your inventory at a time. Also note that the Exotics available from Master Rahool currently do not contain all past exotics.

That’s all you really need to know about how to get Exotic Ciphers and what they do in Destiny 2. This new currency is a bit of a departure for Bungie from how they dealt with getting old exotics. It remains to be seen how this new system will all work out. Let me know your thoughts in the comments below.
