First Look at Ghost of Tsushima Gameplay Shown during Summer Game Fest

Given the current state of the world traditional events to showcase new games and gameplay footage have shifted online. One of the more high profile events that has emerged from the pandemic is called the Summer Game Fest. This four month long event that is being put on by a collection of game Publishers and The Game Awards host Geoff Keighley aims to fill the traditional event void with streamed game announcements and game play showcases. For today’s show (May 14th) Summer Game Fest played host to Sony and developer Sucker Punch Production to show a first look at Ghost of Tsushima gameplay. Check out the revealed gameplay below.

Ghosts of Tushima Gameplay Footage Shown During Summer Game Fest

The gameplay reveal started with a brief look at the core exploration gameplay element of Ghost of Tsushima. Players in the open world can use the map undiscovered locations along with something called Guiding Wind which guides you towards areas you may be interested in exploring (works much like a way point directional system).

While using the systems above the player mounts a horse and rides through the countryside towards an undiscovered location on the map. Along the way the player farms bamboo resources from plants while riding. Not all of the locations can be found by using the Guiding Wind system so players should be on the lookout for things that might peak their interest like smoke on the horizon or misshapen trees.

Opting not to complete the undiscovered location the player rides along until they reach an NPC. Past this NPC they encounter a Fox which guides you to shrines. When a shrine is unlocked players can fast travel to them.

Ghost of Tsushima Combat Reveal

After the exploration reveal things switched gears into combat. Combat can be broken up into two main approaches: Samurai and Ghost. The traditional samurai approach allows you to duel enemies with your katana or take enemies out from a distance using a bow and arrow.

Running counter to the Samurai approach is the Ghost method. Approaching combat as a Ghost means you use stealth and fear to defeat enemies. This combat style takes the form of triggering certain environmental traps to scare enemies and setup them up for easy assassinations.

Ghost of Tsushima Customization

Once the combat portion was shown the stream touched on customization. There is a number of customization options available for Jin including the types of equipment he wears. Pieces of armor can be dyed using flowers found in the open-world so you can get Jin looking just right.

Alongside the customization options the game features a Photo Mode, Japanese voices, and a black and white Samurai Cinema mode that is a stylized black and white mode players can turn on to get the full experience.

Ghost of Tsushima is expected to release on July 17th exclusively on PlayStation 4. It has yet to be confirmed if this title will be headed to the next-gen PlayStation 5.
