We All Get Bored Down Here or: The full IT Trailer Drops

With all the hype that the teaser trailer got, Warner Brothers had a lot to live up to with this release of the official IT trailer. My initial impression was one of…followed by..and then. But let’s get into it, shall we?

If you care at all about Pennywise, than you’re approaching this material wrong, and WB’s trailer is focusing way, way too much on Pennywise. The truly great horror movies are the ones that build a world, and then plug a villain, or some type of evil force into them. It would seriously be just as enjoyable to watch the gang at U.S. Outpost 31 go about their day to day, as it is watching them have to deal with a shape changing alien that is brought into their lives by an Alaskan Malamute. So, the biggest problem with the IT trailer is that it is focused exclusively on the jump scares caused by the film’s boogeyman, Pennywise, rather than the bond between the kids, and their need for each other to survive in a messed up world.

I realize that this trailer is likely trying to appeal to the normies whose idea of a good horror films is Annabelle, but this trailer of jump scare after jump scare has be done, countless times. Give me some life, give me some sense of the characters, a tangible world that I can get on board with, not a scene with a room full of clown dolls, with the obvious jump scare of Pennywise being there at the end. Of course, the movie could still be great, and could give us a believable world with memorable characters, but right now this just looks like a movie from the director of Mama…which of course it is…
