The Greatest Show on Earth is Reaction Shots

The trailer for Huge Jacked-Man’s new flick The Greatest Showman is sub-par, on every level that one judge’s a trailer on. The most ridiculous thing is how the trailer basically just shows people’s faces as they are (presumably) reacting to someone or something. Then you got some song (presumably from the film) just pummeling your ear holes for the majority of the film’s run time, and well, it’s not good, not good at all.

My first thought during this trailer was, La La Land is such a mediocre musical, and now we get another mediocre musical, and then this credit popped up at the end of the trailer…

And I was just like “well at least we know that the film will have one okay song, and a bunch of other songs that no one can even remember, because they are not memorable”. I am shocked that that credit didn’t highlight the fact that Pasek and Paul are also a Golden Globe, Academy Award, and Tony Award winning duo. That seems like a serious missed opportunity…

In summation, I am all for musicals, I’m just not for these second rate, aspiring for nothing, all I know about musicals I learned from the film adaptation of Chicago (it will come as no surprise that Bill Condon has got his screenwriter stamp on The Greatest Showman) and Moulin Rouge!, musicals that are way too effects heavy and stylized for their own good. I want musicals that aren’t just about a gimmick of shooting everything in close ups, and getting Russell Crowe to sing. Where are the musicals inspired by Busby Berkeley? Where are the musicals that are truly cinematic, but at the same time actually have impressive choreography and showmanship? Honestly, musicals these days just come across as being made so that studios can sell a movie and an album, and make that sweet sweet moolah. You know what, forget money, go full Busby, or don’t even bother making a musical. #RealTalk
