Surtr – The God of Fire

Hellblade Senua's Sacrifice Guide

If you chose the door on the right (yellow markings), you will head towards Surtr, The God of Fire. Like Valrvn, Surtr has a bunch of puzzles to complete before reaching the boss. These puzzles consist of finding the correct shapes in your surroundings to open gates as well as using fire altars to burn entire areas and open new paths. Surtr’s area also features more combat than Valrvn’s, so be prepared.

Shape Gate 1

When you enter the gate into Surtr’s area, you will be inside a huge open area. Head forward and you will see a Shape Gate in a city wall. Before you can open the Shape Gate, you need to face off against a few enemies. Defeat the enemies here and then Focus on the Shape Gate. You will see that you need to find an two Nordic symbols. These symbols can be found in the environment.

The H can be found by looking away from the Shape Gate and heading left. You will find a hill that takes you up to an observation like area. Stand on the observation area and use the trees here to make the H as pictured in pic 1.

The Y can be found by heading into the center(ish) portion of the level. Look for a skinny single pole. Line the pole up with the Y in the background as seen in pic 2.

With both symbols found, head back to the now opened gate and proceed through it. Head forwards until you reach a new challenge, Surtr’s Gate.

Surtr’s Gate 1

Hellblade Senua's Sacrifice Guide

Before Surtr’s Gate 1, there are more enemies to fight. Clear the enemies and you will learn that Surtr’s Gates can only be opened by activating Surtr’s Shrines. Surtr’s Shrines essentially burn everything around them, including Surtr’s Gate.

Facing away from the Surtr’s Gate, head to the right and you should see a pathway. Follow the pathway and you will come to a new area. In this area, you will see Surtr’s Shrine. Walk up to the shrine and activate it.

Upon activating the shrine, everything will burn around you. Make your way back to the now open Surtr’s Gate and head through it to the next area.

Surtr’s Gate 2

In the next area, you will see a bridge with the path blocked. Surtr is across this bridge, but we need to find another way. Make your way to the pathway below the bridge. Here you will find the next Surtr’s Gate.

The Surtr’s Shrine here is a bit of a run, but nothing challenging. Turn around from the gate and head underneath the bridge. Keep walking and you will find a huge, open area with the Surtrt Shrine inside. Along the left of this area is a cave entrance that allows you to reach the shrine.

Activate the Shrine and make the long run back to Surtr’s Gate. Make your way through the gate and into the next area.

Shape Gate 2 + Surtr’s Gate 3

Inside the next area you will enter what is a small settlement. There are a few run down buildings here, along with a Surtr’s Gate, Surtr’s Shrine, and Shape Gate. We need to open the Shape Gate to get to Surtr’s Shrine. This can be done by finding two shapes in the area.

The first shape can be found in the cluster of trees in the center of the area. Look for the two trees making an X and frame them in the two vertical trees.

The second shape requires heading into the house with the open door and making your way upstairs. Cross the roof here and enter the broken loft of the second building. Look to the right from this area and you will see a charred R on the ground.

Once both shapes are found, return to the Shape Gate and activate the shrine. This triggers the shrine and forces you to escape. You can’t take a direct root here and instead need to make your way through the house; go upstairs; drop down; fight some enemies; then you can escape.

Shape Gate 3 + Surtr’s Gate 4

This is the final area before the boss fight Surtr. Here you need to open the Shape Gate by finding the 3 shapes. There are shapes in both the longhouses as well as a shape on top of the lookout. See descriptions in pictures for better idea.

Once the Shape Gate is open, you can activate Surtr’s Shrine and head up to Surtr’s Arena. Here we will face off against the The God of Fire!

Boss: Surtr

Surtr can be described as simply a larger Norsemen. His attacks are pretty slow and telegraphed, which means dodging is your friend here. All I did during this fight was to dodge, attack, dodge, attack, etc. This approach seemed to work pretty well.

A couple of things to know: Surtr stops mid fight to collect ‘power’. As soon as he does this, dodge towards him and attack until he breaks out of the animation. The other thing to know is that Surtr will burst into flames after you’ve dealt enough damage. You can’t damage him in this state, but can if you pop Focus.

Repeat the process a few times and you’ll easily kill The God of Flames. Once he’s dead, you will have beaten the area and can return to the Hell’s Gate.
