How to Evolve Applin in Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield
In Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield there is a rare Pokemon called Applin. This Pokemon is basically a mixture of an apple and a worm. What’s interesting about Applin is that it evolves into two possible Pokemon depending on the copy of the game you own. Where to Find and Catch Applin?
Before you can evolve this Pokemon you first need to find and catch it. You can find Applins in a number of places. The first place is on Route 5 as a surprise encounter in the tall grass (10%). If you have no luck there you can venture into the Wild Area. Here you may find Applin in the following locations:
- Stony Wilderness in thunderstorm weather
- Giant’s Mirror in thunderstorm weather
- Dusty Bowl in sunny weather

How to Evolve Applin Into Sweet Apple or Tart Apple
Once you have an Applin you need to get an edition specific item to make it evolve. Players with Pokemon Sword get the Tart Apples while players with Pokemon Shield get the Sweet Apple. To get these items you have a few ways to go about it.
Where to find Sweet Apple or Tart Apple?
The first and quickest way to evolve Applin is to visit the boy in the red jacket on the west side of Hammerlocke on your way towards Route 6. When you speak to the boy he will ask you if you hear the rumor. Say you haven’t then give over your Applin. A cutscene occurs then you will get your Applin back. The boy will give you a Tart Apple/Sweet Apple.
If you don’t like the method above, there are a couple of other ways to get the Tart Apple/Sweet Apple item. These methods are a bit longer and more up to chance:
- On Akew’s Eye island in Wild Area (requires Rotom Water Bike).
- Possible reward from Battle Cafes.
Again the methods listed above are alternative ways of getting Tart Apple/Sweet Apple items though they take more time and effort.
Give Tart Apple/Sweet Apple to Applin to Evolve into Flapple or Appletun
Regardless of how you precur your Tart Apple/Sweet Apple the next step to evolution is the same. Simply take the item from your backpack and give it to your Applin. Once you do this the evolution process will begin. You will get Flapple if you are on Sword and Appletun if you are on Shield.
That’s all you need to know to evolve your own Applin. As you can see you will need to have access to a copy of Pokemon Shield or have a willing trade partner if you want to catch ’em all.
