How to Get The Master Sword in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild does things a bit differently than previous games in the series. Instead of giving you iconic weapons (like the Master Sword), you can play through the entire game by simply using weapons you pick up off of defeated enemies. If you want to get the Master Sword it takes a lot more work, but is well worth the effort. Let’s take a look at how to get the Master Sword in Breath of the Wild below. Note: You need 13 red hearts to pull out the Master Sword.

Make Your Way through the Lost Woods to Korok Forest

Before doing anything, you need to actually find the location of the Master Sword. It turns out Zelda locked it away in Korok Forest 100 years ago in preparation of you awakening from your slumber. So where exactly is Korok Forest? Well, Korok Forest is smack dab in the center of the Lost Woods to the west of Goron City (use Woodland Tower if you have it). Once you make your way to the Lost Woods, you will need to complete a couple of simple puzzles (or you get warped back to the start) to reach Korok Forest. These puzzles are fairly simple:

  1. The first puzzle involves following the directions the flames are pointing in lit lanterns. Eventually you will reach two lanterns with a torch leaning up against one of them. Grab the torch and lit it to begin puzzle two.
  2. In puzzle two you are basically doing puzzle one, but using your torch instead of following the lit lanterns. All you want here is to be heading in the direction your flame/embers blow in the wind. Once you follow this long enough, you will reach Korok Forest.

When you arrive in Korok Forest, you will see a number of familiar faces including Koroks, the Great Deku Tree, and the Master Sword. Now we need to figure out how to get the Master Sword.

How to Get The Master Sword

When you arrive in Korok Forest, approach the Master Sword and interact with it to trigger some story cutscenes. Once the cutscenes wrap up, you will be told to test your strength to see if you are strong enough to wield the legendary blade. All you need to know here is that strength essentially equals how much health you have. To pull the Master Sword out you need to have a total of 13 red hearts, otherwise you will fail. If you have enough hearts the Master Sword will be added to your inventory for use.
