League of Legends 2017 Season Ends Today!

The League of Legends 2017 season is coming to an end today. This will mark the end of the seventh season since League was first released (makes me feel old). When the season ends, preseason begins, and with it comes a number of huge changes to League of Legends which I will highlight below.

UPDATE: League of Legends 2017 Season is now over!

League of Legends 2017 Season End

Before talking about the changes, let me start by telling you exactly when the 2017 season ends. Riot was kind enough to include an FAQ which addresses this topic head on. From the post:

The 2017 season ends November 7 at 23:59 local time. A game has to start before 23:59 to count towards your final ranking. However, the final Challenger ladder standing locks at 23:45, so make sure your game ends by then if you’re chasing those top spots!

Preseason Changes

Now that you know when the season ends, it’s time to begin to prepare for the preseason. The preseason is bringing with it a number of significant changes to League of Legends as a whole. Some of the major changes are:

League of Legends 2017 Season

  • Runes + Masteries Rework: The Runes and Masteries system in League of Legends has been completely overhauled. Instead of the current side – by side system of previous seasons Runes and Masteries will now be streamlined into a single system. In the new system, all 60 Runes will be free to all players, but pages still need to be purchased in order to save multiple builds.

  • Level Cap at 30 is No More: League will no longer have a level cap. In its place is a new system that lets you level infinitely while also introducing new ways of earning loot.

  • IP is Gone and Essence is New Currency: Once the preseason begins, all IP will switch to blue essence and become the main currency of League of Legends. Blue essence will work everywhere you normal IP did and the cost of items will remain the same after the currency exchange occurs.

These are the major changes Riot is implementing in League of Legends in the upcoming preseason. To read more about the nuances of the changes, check out the official Riot post on the topic which offers some deeper insight into why changes are being made and the numbers behind the changes.
