Water Vellumental Shrine Guide

Note: This shrine contains enemies called Sidesteppers which can only be damaged using Iron Boots or your Hammer. Remember this when you encounter these crab-like enemies.

Open the shrine door and enter the building. When you first enter you will be in a large lobby area. Make your way over to the save block on the center path and use it. To reach the boss you need to open the door by the save block. To open this door you need to complete multiple areas of the shrine starting with the left-side.

Head back to the center of the shrine and hang a left. Walk across the bridge and hit the ? Block 1 there to get 100 coins. Before going into the door head down to reach Not-Bottomless Hole 1. Fill this hole then hit the bug on the wall to rescue Toad 1. Head back to the doorway and enter it to reach the left rooms of the shrine.

Left Room 1

Head to the left in the first room and hit the Sidestepper with your hammer. Defeat this enemy then hit the 2x ? Blocks to get a bag of Confetti and Shiny Iron Boots. Equip the Shiny Iron Boots then continue heading to the left then go up the stairs leading to the Not-Bottomless Hole 2. As you approach you will get attacked by some Sidesteppers that come out of the wall. Complete this battle then fill in the hole. Avoid the next two Sidesteppers that appear out of the wall and continue to the next room.

Left Room 2: Slide Puzzle Solution

Approach the console in this next room to find it is missing a puzzle piece. Before we can solve this puzzle we need to find that last piece.

To find the missing puzzle piece head to the left wall where there is a blue Sidestepper peaking out. Hit the wall where this enemy is to reveal a passage. Go into the passage and you will find a number of Sidesteppers including a blue one holding the puzzle piece. Avoid or fight the Sidesteppers as you make your way to the back wall. Hammer the wall to lower a POW block. Use the POW Block to flip over the blue Sidestepper. Approach it to fight. Win the fight then pick up the Groovy Panel.

Return to the previous room and interact with the console again. To complete this puzzle you need to make a path from the top to the bottom right. This can easily be done by moving the panels as shown in the image above. Once you’ve setup the three tiles insert the final tile to solve the puzzle. Before heading back to the lobby room grab the coins and Fire Flower that appear.

Central Room: Water Flowing from Left

Head back to the central room in the shrine to find that there is water flowing into the room. This will half open the Water Vellumental’s mouth. You will also find the center platform is rotating allowing you to reach the right portion of the shrine. Cross the center platform then head over to the ? Block 4 to get 100 coins. Walk past the entrance to the next room to find Not-Bottomless Hole 2 on top of some stairs. Fill it in then go down the stairs to the path below.

On the path below go to the left to reach a treasure chest with Collectible Treasure No.37: Restaurant Fridge in it. Head back to the stairs and follow the path to the background. Fill in Not-Bottomless Hole 3 and then hit the purple and white looking square on the background wall to rescue Toad 2 (will give you Max HP+5).

Through the window the Toad was in you will see a treasure chest. Walk along the wall to the left until you reach a gap. Hit the gap with your hammer to reveal a ? Block 5 jump on this block and keeping hit the invisible blocks until you can enter the room. Inside this treasure chest you will find Collectible Treasure No.38: MAX UP Heart.

Leave this secret room and follow the path to the foreground. Fight the Swoops that attack you and then stand on the grey square. Jump to reveal a ? Block 6 that has Shiny Iron Boots in it. Return to the stairs, go up them and enter the entrance to the right side of the shrine.

Right Room 1

In this first room you will see a number of blocks impeding your path. These blocks can be smashed with your hammer. For now simply smash all the boxes and fight the enemies you encounter in the first little section of the room. Along the left wall you will find an gap you can use to reach the treasure chest above that contains Collectible Treasure No.39: POW Block. Go back down the ramp and fill in Not-Bottomless Hole 4. Continue right and smash the boxes to reveal a ledge you can jump on to reach Not-Bottomless Hole 5. Fill it in then drop down below. Cross the room and go into the exit.

Immediately turn around and go back into room one if you wish to grab those collectibles we missed. Jump from the exit platform to the box to reach the ? Block with a POW Block inside it. Drop down and jump to the ledge we used to reach Not-Bottomless Hole 5. With the boxes respawned we can reach the right corner of the room where there is a ? Block 7 and Not-Bottomless Hole 6. Head back to the exit to room two and go through it (again).

Right Room 2

Inside the second room you will see flowing water coming out of the Water Vellumental’s head. Immeditaely head to the right corner of the background and repair Not-Bottomless Hole 7. Drop back to the path and follow it to the foreground so you reach an entrance. Go into this entrance and head up to the window with the Toad in it. Hit the toad out to rescue Toad 3.

Head back down and make your way to the left side of the room. Repeat the same process making your way along the foreground to reach the door in the left corner. Go into the door and up the ramp so you reach the Water Vellumental’s head. Hit it with your hammer to close its mouth which diverts the water flow. Drop down and enter the door that opens.

Room 3: Slide Puzzle Solution

This third room has another slide puzzle in it. Tp complete this puzzle you need to find the missing puzzle piece. Head to the back left corner of the room to find a crack in the wall. Hammer the crack to reveal a passage. Go into this passage and hit the ? Block to get a bag of confetti. Continue to the right to hit another ? Block 8 for 100 coins. Follow the path to the foreground to reach Not-Bottomless Hole 8. Repair it then drop down to the area below.

In this lower area you will see a pond. In this pond there are a number of Cheap Cheap enemies. Defeat all the Cheap Cheap enemies that jump out of the pond to get a Mushroom. After this hit the wall in the back right corner and enter the next room that has the puzzle piece in it.

When you grab the puzzle piece you will get jumped be a bunch of Sidesteppers. This starts a wave battle. Complete the battle then head up the steps to reach Not-Bottomless Hole 9. Fix this hole to enter a coffee shop. Stop and have a drink if you need some healing. Leave the shop and head towards the foreground to return to the previous room. Go back to the console room and complete the puzzle (solution is shown above). If you have trouble getting the puzzle completed you can press X and pay coins to auto solve it.

Once solved the water will flow to the central room where the Vellumental Mouth will open completely. Use the pipe to head back there and hit the save block. Go through the mouth to start the boss fight.

Water Vellumental Boss Fight

Note: Equip your Shiny Iron Boots and Shiny Iron Hammers before entering the boss arena.

Upon entering the Water Vellumental head make your way forward to the platform in the center of the room. When you step on the platform the water will start to bubble and a dragon will appear. This dragon is the Water Vellumental. Like other boss fights you need to use the arrows to reach the boss to deal damage. When the Water Vellumental is in the air it can only be brought down with a jump attack. The Water Vellumental also uses an ability called Summon Spout which washes away squares in the lanes they are summons. This is something to keep in mind during the fight as your planned out path can be washed away. Some other fight tip I can give you are:

  • Equip Guard Plus and Heart Plus accessories available at the Accessories Shop outside of the Earth Vellumental Temple.
  • Use Toad cheer when needed to get health and other bonuses
  • Block whenever possible.
  • Add time with + if you need to think.
  • Use Earth Elemental when Water Vellumental becomes water-logged.

Once you complete the fight you will unlock the Water Vellumental Bibliofold. This book gives you the Water Vellumental ability which allows you to refill dry areas like the lake at the start of Autumn Mountain.

Leave the shrine and head there if you would like (using the pipe to the right of the shrine bridge). You can also go back to Overlook Tower via the fax lab to get a few collectibles we couldn’t get earlier (if you are going for 100% completion).
