Storyline Quest: Urgent: Pukei-Pukei Hunt

Hunting Quest Text: “That Pukei-Pukei is none too pleased to have that slag in its territory. It’ll be even less pleased if we send in our own scholars to research it. Looks like we have to put it down!”

Characteristics: A flying Wyvern known to possess poisonous toxins in its body. It’s been spotted storing scatternuts in its mouth or tail, coating them with poison and spitting them out at threats.

Useful Information: Observational reports state that Pukei-Pukei will bully weaker monster but cower before bigger, stronger monsters. It’s prone to retreating at the first sign of danger, so use that to your advantage.

Pukei-Pukei Guide

Main Fight Mechanics: Roar + Poison (Status Effect)

Roar: Large monsters have the ability to roar. This ability disrupts whatever action the hunter was doing (stun locks you briefly). There’s not much you can do about it in the early game (you’ll get better armor perks later).

Poison: Poison in Monster Hunter: World, slowly drains the Hunter’s health. The status effect is denoted by two pink dots above the the health bar. While poisoned, you will also see your health bar turn purple to indicate the health drain. The way to cure poison is to use an Antidote.

Attacks:

Pukei-Pukei is a relatively easy fight if you have antidotes. The monster itself has a few attacks, but nothing really crazy. It serves as a good introduction to dealing with poison element monsters. Let’s take a look at attacks below:

*I attempted to grab all the attacks I saw. Let me know if I missed some in The Pit.

  • Ground Pound – Quickly rises into the air and then comes crashing down multiple times.
  • Charge w/tongue – Will raise onto back legs and charge while swinging tongue around.
  • Air Dive – Rises into the air and dives the hunter.
  • Tongue Attack – can use its tongue to attack if close to face.
  • Spit (Poison) – Will spit scatternuts at you that may inflict Poison status effect (can spit in rapid succession).
  • Spit-splash (Poison) – Spits out large amounts of poison which has splash radius towards hunter.
  • Tail spray (Poison) – Can spray poison out of tail.

Fight Tips:

Pukei-Pukei is the first fight you will face where the monster can deal a damaging status effect to you. This means you can easily die if you aren’t prepared or take the fight lightly. Here are some tips to make things a bit more manageable:

  • Eat up – Head into the fight having eaten a meal from the Canteen (do this for every fight to make life easier)
  • Carry Potions and Antidotes – Due to Pukei-Pukei’s poison abilities, head into the fight with ample potions and antidotes on hand.
  • Bait Out Spit Attack – If you can bait out the spit attacks and get close to Pukei-Pukei, there is a nice window of opportunity to deal some serious damage to the head and body.
  • Cut off Tail – Pukei-Pukei can secrete poison from both its head and tail. Cut off the tail to make avoiding poison much easier.
  • Exploit Elemental Weakness: This isn’t applicable for a first fight (you won’t have access to elemental weapons), but is useful if you want to farm. As noted above, Pukei-Pukei is especially weak to thunder elemental damage.
  • Flash Pods/Flash Bombs – Bring Flash Pods and Flash Bombs to get flying wyverns out of the air.
  • SOS – If you need to, send out an SOS and get some extra help from the MHW community

Note: share your tips in the comments and I will add them here.
