What is That? Space Odyssey Taps Expertise of Neil deGrasse Tyson

Space. The final frontier. Video games have often given players the chance to explore the final frontier and Kickstarter Space Odyssey wants to do the same thing. What’s interesting about this space game versus No Man’s Sky is that Neil deGrasse Tyson is working as an advisor. That’s right. Physicist Neil deGrasse Tyson is entering the video game business. So what exactly is Tyson’s new game? Let’s take a look.

About Space Odyssey

Space Odyssey is a space exploration game with heavy emphasis on the science behind space travel, planetary colonization, and other sciencey stuff. With the involvement of Tyson, the game promises a heavy emphasis on realistic physics. According to the the game’s Kickstarter, the game is:

Empowered by the laws of physics and the scientific vision of Neil deGrasse Tyson and his StarTalk All-Stars team of scientist-educators, you’ll set out on real science-based missions to explore space, colonize planets, create and mod in real time.

Space Odyssey is being developed by Big Red Button alongside Tyson and his group of science advisors. This collective of individuals working in the game’s design come from widespread pool of talent including comic book writer Len Wein. As of the time of writing, the game has passed its initial funding goal of $314,159. Platform wise, the game is set to release on Steam and potentially GOG.     Tyson’s thing is over simplified pop science and history. And he’s frequently wrong. I am expecting his game to be scientifically inaccurate.
