If you’ve played Tetris 99 before you will immediately recognize how Super Mario Bros. 35 works. Essentially you are pitted against 34 other players in an attempt to be the last Mario standing. To survive you need to avoid Ensuring your survival in this platformer comes from a few game mechanics I will highlights below.

How to Send Enemies to Other Players

As you advance through the different stages of the classic Mario title you will encounter various enemies. When you defeat an enemy you send that enemy into an opponent’s game. This makes the game harder for your opponent as they will have to deal with more enemies in their game. You can use a few methods of selecting who you target to send enemies to:

  • Manual Target Selection: All of the small squares around you are other player’s games. You can use the right-thumbstick to hover on a game to manually select them as a target to send enemies to. The game you select will be highlighted by a red square.
  • Auto Target Selection: Since it can be a touch overwhelming at times you may wish to target players on the fly. This can be done using the auto-target feature. At the top of your game screen there is a transparent set of auto targets for you to quickly select. These quickly target the following.
    • Lowest Time: Targets the player with the lowest amount of time.
    • Most Coins: Targets the player with the most collected coins.
    • Attacker: Targets the player sending the most enemies into your game.
    • Random: Selects a random target.

To use the Auto Target system simply push the right thumbstick in the direction of the possible targets listed above. This will automatically target the player that meets the criteria of that Auto Target Selection. As the game can get pretty frantic at times the Auto Target system can be an easy way of focusing enemies without shifting your focus from the core platforming.

How to Earn More Time

Like the classic Mario from days of old you will be racing against the clock alongside your enemies. Since you can get K.O’d when the clock reaches zero it is important to constantly be earning more time while you are playing. Luckily there are a number of methods to earn time in each level:

  • Defeating enemies using various methods.
  • Beating levels (top of the flag nets you +15 seconds).
  • Collecting items (picking up excess items like Fireflowers earn you +15 seconds).
  • Knocking out players.

As you move closer to the end of the match you will notice time starts speeding up. This means you will need to focus on banking as much time as possible when you are playing through each level. At the maximum you can have 400 seconds banked.

What to Do With Coins

In each level you can collect coins. These coins serve a number of purposes that at first may not seem all that obvious. These purposes range from receiving in-game items to score keeping. Let’s take a closer look at what exactly coins do in Super Mario Bros. 35 below.

  • Item Roulette: When you collect 20 coins in- a match you will unlock Item Roulette. As the name of this system suggests you can trigger a spin to get a random item. This spin is started by X. When Item Roulette is ready you will see a square appear in the top left corner of your game screen. It can be used multiple times in a row.
  • Starting Item: On the Select a Course screen you can purchase a starting item. This makes it so you start the next match with that item already active allowing you to get a leg up at the start.
  • Coin Ranking: Each game mode tracks your best coins collected game. You are then ranked on the Coin Ranking leader-board. Access to this board appears to unlock after your first win.

Coins can really shift the results of a match so you will want to collect them as you advance through each match. The more coins you have in-game the more Item Roulettes you can spin when needed. You can also use those coins to

Winning and Leveling

The goal of this game is to win. When you reach the end of a match and hit that number 1 spot you will earn the chest of coins that accumulates during a match. These bonuses coins are added to your total which comes in handy to buy items before a match starts. Alongside winning coins you also receive a healthy amount of XP which contributes to your level. Leveling up your account unlocks new icons you can display.
