Things to Know About Apex Legends

Apex Legends was launched on February 4 in what can easily be described as a quiet launch. Unlike other games of this generation, Apex Legends launched without having shown off any trailers or gameplay. While this approach seems like suicide in this day and age (with everything being about capturing attention), Respawn Entertainment bucked the trend and created what can only be described as an overnight success. Let’s take a closer look. Here’s a few things you to know about Apex Legends.

Released on February 4th, Apex Legends is a new title out of Respawn Entertainment. If the studio’s name sounds familiar, that’s because it is the studio behind the Titanfall series. Like Titanfall, Apex Legends is a first person shooter with emphasis on mobility. Unlike Titanfall, Apex Legends is a free-to-play Battle Royale game. A Battle Royale game is a last team left standing game genre which involves gearing up, fighting other players and attempting to emerge victorious. What makes Apex Legends stand out in the highly competitive BR field is its marriage of tight mechanics, champions (rather than no-named characters), and general gamer hype (the consensus is that this game is pretty good).

Is Apex Legends Part of the Titanfall Universe?

With Respawn and EA being involved in the release of Apex Legends there is some confusion over what universe this game takes place in. Is it its own IP? Is it an offshoot of the Titanfall? The answer is the latter. During the opening cutscene of Apex Legends, a main antagonist of Titanfall 2 is the voiceover you are hearing. This sets the stage for how Apex Legends is part of the Titanfall universe. Other things we know include that Apex Legends takes place 30 years after the events of Titanfall 2 in an area called the Outlands.

Is Apex Legends Pay-To-Win?

There are a number of purchasable items in Apex Legends. One of the items players can buy is Legend Skins.

Like other offerings in the BR market, Apex Legends is hoping to cash in on purchases made by players. Unlike other BR titles, Apex Legends feature a rather robust offering of purchasable items which range from character skins and weapon skins to banners, quips and finishers. As of writing there is no pay-to-win aspect to the purchasable items in Apex Legends. Everything for sale is purely cosmetic and can be purchased through the game’s store.
