top 10 highest earning games

The Super Mario Brothers make their second appearance on this list with the inclusion of Super Mario Bros. for the NES. While other games came before the iconic plumbing brothers, this game really cemented the concept of gaming as a hobby and industry. Not only was the Super Mario Bros. a hit, it also established the entire Mario ensemble as being an integral part of modern pop-culture. Racking up an incredible 40.24 million copies sold places Super Mario Bros. fifth on our list.

4. Grand Theft Auto V (70 Million Copies)

The newest game on the list is Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto V having been released in 2011. Grand Theft Auto V is the fifth installment in the hugely popular, crime based sandbox Grand Theft Auto series. The inclusion of Grand Theft Auto V on this list proves the age old age that controversy truly does sell. With that aside there is far more to Grand Theft Auto games then killing hookers or robbing people. Things like huge worlds, immersive stories, interesting characters and the ability to do whatever you want have elevated the series into the beloved category. Grand Theft Auto V is a perfect example of all these Rockstar systems working in perfect harmony and fans seem to agree.

3. Wii Sports (82.78 Million Copies)

top 10 highest earning games

Wii Sports makes its appearance here at the third spot on our top 10 highest earning games and the inclusion of a game like this is impressive as Wii Sports was only released on a single console. Now the one caveat with Wii Sports inclusion is that the game was included in bundles with the Wii. So essentially everyone with a Wii had this game. With that aside, the game itself really brought to the forefront the concept of motion control. Wii Sports had an absurd level of accessibility that even “Non – Gamers” found a reason to get the game and system. With the Nintendo Switch slated for March 3rd, it will be interesting to see if Nintendo can capture some of the Wii Sports/Wii magic.

2. Minecraft (107.86 Million Copies)

top 10 highest earning games

Who would have thought that a game which involves gathering resources, building things, fighting things and doing a bunch of other things could be this successful? Mojang’s 2011 indie gem, took off. Players all over the world grabbed millions of copies of this game over the span of a few years and the Minecraft really took off. In fact, Minecraft was successful that suitors for the company quickly emerged, and the studio was inevitably bought out by Microsoft for $2.5 Billion. One of the reasons for Minecraft’s success is how many systems it is available on. Players can play the game on their phone, computer or console. At 107.86 Million copies sold, Minecraft is number two on this top 10 highest earning games list.

1. Tetris (495 Million Copies)

It’s hard to imagine a world without Tetris. Created in 1984 by a gentlemen named Alexey Pajitnov, Tetris would go on to consume the lives of hundreds of millions of people. This simple block falling puzzle game is still played regularly to this day. One thing that helps is Tetris is available on literally every console/computer/phone/tablet in (what seems like) existence. Having such a broad reach means that players everywhere can. This mass reach lands Tetris at a mind blowing 495 Million Copies sold which is good enough to take the top spot on our top 10 highest earning games list.

When the Black Box was first created the world got a peek at gaming and liked it. Over the next 50 years, new consoles and games would flood the market, creating a multibillion dollar industry. The games listed in this top 10 highest earning games highlight the games that have had a global impact and made some serious money along the way. From Tetris to Skyrim, gamers have experienced incredible products. Here’s hoping the next 50 years are even better.

As a connoisseur of all this video and game related I find it a shot to the heart that you have not played Diablo 3. Coming from someone who may or may not have put in over 600 hours in the game I think that you would enjoy it immensely.

I know fanboys will attack me, but Skyrim is extremely overrated. No, it isn’t because I “durr hurr hate game ‘everyone’ loves”, but merely for the fact, as a long standing series, which excelled in the past, Skyrim brought nothing new to the table. The only reason why it is touted as being ‘the best of the best’ is merely for the n**e mods (PC side) and because Xbox fans want to hold it over PS/Nintendo fans as being the “definitive version”.

Lets not forget, the reason why Skyrim keeps selling, is due to the under-aged kids that think this game is the true pinnacle of RPGs/Action-Adventure games. Actually, another thing, the weird (occult-like) obsession with Todd Howard, among Bethesda fanboys.
