Xeno’jiiva Fight Guide
Main Fight Mechanic: Roar + Tremor + Fire + Dragonblight
Roar: Large monsters have the ability to roar. This ability disrupts whatever action the hunter was doing (stun locks you briefly). There’s not much you can do about it in the early game (you’ll get better armor perks later).
Tremor: Xeno’jiiva is a large monster who can make the ground shake when it does certain attacks. These tremors stun hunters without proper decorations equipped.
Fireblight: When being afflicted with Fireblight, a small flame will appear over the hunter’s health bar (two for Severe), and the red health bar will turn red and begin to decrease. To cure this affliction, simply roll into water once, roll on the ground three times, or consume a Nulberry.
Dragonblight: Xeno’jiiva can deal the dragonblight status effect with its purple flames. This status effect nullifies the elemental properties of your weapon. The dragonblight effect is denoted by a purple footprint looking icon above the hunter’s health bar. To cure this effect, use a Nullberry.
Attacks:
Xeno’jiiva is a paradoxical fight as it can be hard, but also incredibly easy. If you’ve played other games with dragons (cough any Dark Souls), you will immediately recognize how to beat this boss easily. If you haven’t note that most dragons of this size can be easily beaten by staying under their body. Also keep in mind that Xeno’jiiva has two forms, with each form effecting attacks and elemental damage. Let’s check out some of the attacks Xeno’jiiva can use in the fight:
*I attempted to grab all the attacks I saw. Let me know if I missed some in The Pit.
Normal Form: Normal form is the basic form of Xeno’jiiva. In this form, the monster is slow and doesn’t deal fire damage. To know which form Xeno’jiiva is in, just look for a purple flame on the body. No purple flame means normal form.
- Swipe – When near the head, Xeno’jiiva can swipe at you with its front claws.
- Tail Smash – When behind Xeno’jiiva, the monster can smash its tail into the ground.
- Charge – Charge towards the hunter/across the arena
- Laser Beam – Shoots a laser beam out of mouth towards hunter. Stays in same direction.
- Fireballs– Shoots 1-3 fireballs out of its mouth in various directions
Charged Form: During the fight Xeno’jiiva will pause and charge. This occurs when it stops, crouches down and then a large purple explosion engulfs the Xeno’jiiva and the nearby area. In this form, Xeno’jiiva becomes quicker and will sometimes fly around the arena. It can also deal Dragonblight and Fireblight in this form, which is something to keep in mind.
- Sweeping Laser Beam – Shoots a laser beam out of its mouth that sweeps around the arena.
- Explosion – Similar to charging, Xeno’jiiva hunkers down and a huge explosion shoots out of its body (similar to other elder dragons attack). Once the explosion occurs, random spots of flame will shoot up around the arena (look for the purpleish spots on the ground to know where they will be). If hit by explosion or flames, can be affected by Dragonblight.
- Firetrail – In the charged form, Xeno’jiiva’s laser attacks leave a fire trail around the arena. Stopping on them without proper protection will inflict Fireblight.
- Flying Ground Pound – While flying, can do a ground pound.
- Flying Laser Beam – Shoots lasers while flying around the arena.
Fight Tips
Xeno’jiiva can be a tough fight if you go into without knowing anything. With that being said, I think this is easily one of the easier elder dragons you’ve faced up to this point. Use these tips to make it out of this fight alive and beat Monster Hunter World.
- Eat up – Head into the fight having eaten a meal from the Canteen (do this for every fight to make life easier).
- Bring Nullberry, Cool Drink and Healing – Make sure you have Nullberry, Cool Drink and healing on you. Going into the fight without them makes it way harder. Add on some Armorskin if your defense is lacking.
- Wear Fire Resistant Armor: If you have access to it, wear some armor that has good fire resistance into this fight.
- Bring Fire Resistant Mantle: If you have access to it, bring the fire resistance mantle into this fight. Wearing the mantle in the second phase means you can run over the firetrails without repercussion.
- Aim for Glowing Appendages: Certain parts of Xeno’jiiva glow. Aim for these spots to crit. Hit them enough times and Xeno’jiiva will fall over or get momentarily staggered.
- Stay Behind or Under Xeno’jiiva: When Xeno’jiiva is on the ground or in the air, you best bet is to stay under it. This position seems to put you mostly out of harm’s way.
- Stand Beside its Head When Breathing Fire: When the Xeno’jiiva breathes fire, it is exposed for a few seconds. If you can get beside its head, you can deal damage to it while remaining safe.
- SOS – If you need to, send out an SOS and get some extra help from the MHW community.
Note: share your tips in the comments and I will add them here.

A ranged weapon seems best for this fight. Dragon element with elderseal. Low doesn’t seem to stop the explosions, high works rather well. Best advice is to hit and run as the fireballs and beams well hit you in the face if you stand too long. Also watch for the tail. When it goes to charged form it seems to be easier to put on the ground, down it and wail your hardest on it. All together this is a pretty simple fight, just pay attention and you will be fine.
